A small campus-based university near the market town of Newport in Shropshire, Harper Adams University specialises in land-based higher education. In the last ten years the university has invested £20 million to improve its campus and facilities, which are situated in parkland but within close proximity of each other. The university has an anaerobic digestion facility which will offset the carbon emissions of the university three times over, and its own commercial farm for students to practice 'in-the-field'.

Background and History

Harper Adams opened to six students in 1901 after Thomas Harper, a Shropshire gentleman farmer, bequeathed the estate. In 1915 Harper Adams admitted women into the college on wartime farm courses, making it the first institute to do so. Degree courses were first introduced in 1981, but it was not until 2012 that Harper Adams received the title 'university', making it the first university in Shropshire. The Sunday Times named Harper Adams as the 'Best University College' each year from 2008 to 2012.

Location and Accessibility

Road: Harper Adams University is 9 miles from the M54 at Telford and 14 miles from the M6 at Shrewsbury. Birmingham is a one-hour drive.
