Hartlepool Sixth Form College is one of fewer than 100 specialist Sixth Form Colleges for ages 16-19, in England. The college has an impressive history since its first appearance in 1902 as the West Hartlepool Grammar School. The college offers a wide range of academic courses at level 3 and in 2008, it recorded a Contextual Value Added of 1,033, placing it in top 5% of institutions of the country.

Hartlepool Sixth Form College works closely with the University of Sunderland and offers the first year of a fully qualifying law degree, unique among sixth form colleges. Performing arts and sports are other fields for which Hartlepool Sixth Form College is well known. The college uses a Student Information System (SIS) as a way to help parents stay informed of students progress within college.

The Hartlepool Sixth Form College underwent a two-part rebuilding phase which finished in 2010. The first phase of the £24.5 million investment included a new wing being added to the Merchant's House. This new atrium led to greater facilities such as a new media and film studies rooms, new art studios and photography suites, music and recording studios and spacious teaching rooms.

The second phase of the investment included new science and maths classrooms, childcare and health classrooms, PE and Sports Science facilities and more.
