Address and Location

Situated in the West Midlands, Newman University is located in semi-rural Bartley Green, 8 miles south-west of Birmingham city centre.  

Background and History

Newman University was founded in 1968 as Newman College of Higher Education, before receiving full university status in 2013. Initially established as a teacher training college, Newman has since expanded to provide a range of single and combined honour degrees, and work-based foundational degrees. The university is founded on Catholic values of tolerance and inclusion and is proud to welcome staff and students of all religions and backgrounds.

Location and Accessibility

By Rail: The nearest station to the university is Northfield, Selly Oak is more convenient to travel from, however. Exit the station via the car park and turn left onto Bristol Road for buses to the university.

By Road: The university's Bartley Green location is conveniently accessible from both the M5 and M42 motorways.

Accessibility: Most university facilities are wheelchair-accessible and accommodation is provided for students with disabilities.

University Accommodation

Newman provides more than 200 bedrooms on campus.First year students are given priority, rooms are not guaranteed for second and third-year students. Accommodation in halls is guaranteed for all international and exchange students.

Private Accommodation

Second and third-year students have the option of looking for private accommodation, Newman offers help and support for house hunters.

Academic Facilities

Newman have recently provided their campus with a £20 million refurbishment to improve study facilities and working spaces. The university boasts a modern campus, including a state-of-the-art library and purpose-built drama and art studios.

The university recently opened its refurbished sports centre. The facility includes a newly-built sports performance suite, fitness suite and all-weather games pitch. The Newman campus also features a selection of cafes and shops.  

Medical and Social Care

The university's students' union is active and provides a variety of support systems for students. Newman also hosts its own chaplaincy.

Although based outside of the city centre, Newman students are free to take advantage of all that Birmingham has to offer.Being the second largest city in the UK and home to several universities means the city knows how to keep its student population entertained.
