Computer Science Personal Statement 2

Computer Science personal statement

My ambition to study computer sciences at Manchester is inspired by two particular considerations, the prestigious nature of the university, particularly in the sciences, and the content and organisation of the computer studies degree course, which appeal to me for both personal and academic reasons.  Manchester University is clearly one of the leading institutions in the country, with an outstanding research record and an impressive history of Nobel Prize winners among its staff and students.  The scale of the University means inevitably that its facilities and academic opportunities are immensely diverse and varied and that most students’ particular intellectual interests can be satisfied.  The international appeal of the University is also very attractive to me, offering as it does the chance to meet with and exchange ideas with people from many different cultures and backgrounds.  Since my principal interest in IT is in its business applications, an understanding of the culture and customs of different parts of the world is of central importance if I am to work in an increasingly international marketplace.  Furthermore, the international reputation and standing of the University, particularly in its computer science output, mean that a degree in the subject from Manchester would be an extremely valuable asset for anyone who is planning to make his or her career in this field. With a Manchester degree in computer science one is certain to be in high demand with employers.

The nature of the degree course supports this view.  The emphasis at all stages on the career-significance of the course, and the clear focusing on the mastering of practical skills and applications, is exactly what I am seeking. I love the science of IT but I am equally excited by the role it plays in the human world, the advantages it can bring to us and the way it can make difficult and time-consuming tasks manageable and rapidly achievable.  IT has revolutionised the way business is conducted across the world. The technology is now at the heart of industrial and commercial processes and is a vital element in efficiency and innovation in a huge range of enterprises – banking and finance, high-tech industry, consulting companies and e-commerce retailers.  The Manchester course, with its emphasis on practical applications and industrial and commercial experience, will allow me to study the ways that software engineers develop systems and programmes to provide solutions to the requirements of business, and how IT can help people to work together to gain a competitive edge in the marketplace.  I am keen to study the management of business databases, the analysis of business systems, web design for business, and the communication skills required for successful commerce.

The Manchester emphasis on study through the engagement with real problems seems ideally suited to my own intellectual and personal approach.  The course appears to allow the student to pursue his or her own academic curiosity and to encourage independent discovery and learning.  The importance of teamwork on projects is also attractive and stimulating.  The specific course content is very thorough and comprehensive, including the basic mathematical techniques of the science, the nature of artificial intelligence, the construction and use of databases, the elements of software engineering, networking, graphics and images, and so on.  The Department has been involved in the research and development of IT for many years and is an immeasurably valuable source of knowledge and experience in the science.  I should feel privileged to have access to this resource in the subject I love.

The metropolitan nature of the city itself is also important.  The city, like the university, is at the heart of the intellectual and professional life of the country, and there could hardly be a more exciting place to study.  I look forward with great enthusiasm to studying computer science at this great institution, and I hope you will consider my application.
