Mathematics Postgraduate Personal Statement

Example Mathematics Postgraduate Personal Statement

From an early age I have been fascinated by Mathematics and the way it stimulates flexible cognitive thinking. Having completed a BSc in Mathematics at the University of Asmara in Eritrea in 2006, I enjoyed the variety offered by Mathematics, both in terms of the modules I studied and the career opportunities it opens up. I now want to expand my knowledge and understanding of Mathematics, Statistics and Economics by obtaining a world-renowned Masters degree that will enable me to pursue a career in Actuary.

During my Mathematics degree in Eritrea I was exposed to a wide variety of Mathematical concepts, ranging from Algebra, Geometry and Physics, to Computer Science and Psychology. I love the way Mathematics establishes truth by a series of deduction from different axioms and definitions. My favourite modules were Economics and Statistics, as they integrate the application of Pure Mathematics with the real world and help us understand the influence of global markets. I enjoy the statistical process of collecting, organising, interpreting and presenting data using a logical and analytical thought process.

During my summer vacation in 2005 I applied my statistical knowledge and kills through my job as a coordinator of Eritrea’s census program. My role involved collating, checking and translating information from the team members to my manager. I continued to work as a Statistician in the Ministry of Education during the summers of 2007 to 2009, collecting and interpreting information from various feedback papers on the educational progress of the country. I was also responsible for assigning materials and teachers by each September.

During the rest of the year between 2006 and 2010 I worked as a Maths teacher at Warsay Yikealo Secondary School in Eritrea, where I loved sharing my passion and enthusiasm for the subject with students. Teaching large classes of up to 50 people aged 17 to 20 I developed strong leadership skills and the ability to work under pressure. I had to organise lesson plans and learning materials, which required me to create imaginative ways to explain complex concepts and keep the students motivated. My commitment to this role extended to giving up my free time to arrange extra tutorials for students preparing for their leaving exams, and reading extensively about the subject. I found this job incredibly rewarding, particularly when my hard work was recognised in 2008 through my promotion to Vice-Head of Department.

I moved to the UK in 2010 and have since been working in a barber shop where I have been learning how to build professional relationships with a diverse client base. My language skills (I speak native Tigriyina, fluent English, Arabic and basic French) enable me to communicate with a wide range of people. This, coupled with a Mathematics degree will open up a broad array of careers opportunities in both the public and private sectors including education, accountancy, industry and actuary, the latter of which particularly appeals to me at present.

I am a very hard working individual with the ability to motivate both myself and others in a team. I quickly adapt to new environments and have a desire to continually learn new things, both attributes which will enable me to cope well with university study in the UK. I plan to play an active role in all aspects of university life; at Asmara University I captained the football team, leading them to victory in numerous championships. During my teaching career I also acted as a football referee, displaying reliability, trustworthiness and assertiveness. In my spare time I enjoy playing basketball, pool and going to the gym as well as reading Mathematics books, novels and newspapers, going to the cinema and cooking. I am a well-rounded and confident individual, and look forward to facing the challenges which lie ahead.
